TIP OF THE DAY: Take Care of You
Todd Dewett | September 19, 2019
I’m inspired by you hard chargers. The ones who go the extra mile, dig down deep and get fired up about the work that needs to get done. The ones who want to excel and create positive change.
I do, however have to remind you that moving mountains is difficult. Improving the team you lead is hard enough. Trying to change the entire organization is even more daunting. I love that you’re trying, but don’t you ever forget that you have to stay healthy and sane in order to continue making progress.
You have to remember to take care of you.
This can mean many things. The classics include decent diet, exercise, and proper sleep. Good advice. Let me add three huge yet overlooked ideas.
First, make time to laugh. If you don’t laugh every day, that’s on you. Schedule it if you have to. You can think about a funny aspect of your otherwise difficult situation at work. Remember a hilarious joke. Watch something funny. Call a friend who makes you laugh. Genuine laughter combats stress like few other things, so make it happen.
Next, count your blessings. I know that you get caught up thinking about the work not yet completed, the goals not yet achieved. The house or car not yet paid off. I know. I get it. But you’re focusing only on one side of the coin. Take time to overtly say thanks for the progress you’ve made, the work completed, the milestones complete, the payments made. Not to mention, your health, family, etc. There are always blessings to count – if you look for them.
Finally, don’t forget to speak up for yourself. You can’t always say yes. You can’t always work late. You can’t always miss family events. Sometimes you should bend and take one for the team – but not always. Be clear with your friends and loved ones. Be clear with your boss. When you need to say no, or truly need time off, say so. You are your best advocate, so speak up. You may not always get the answer you need, but you’ll never get it if you don’t ask.
Don’t forget hard chargers: you can only keep charging if you’re taking care of yourself.
Stay Up To Speed With Dr. D.!
I’m having a blast these past few weeks. I really enjoyed some good family time with my two boys before school once again started up. Pax is now in 11th grade and Parker is in 7th – wow, it’s amazing how fast time flies. I’m currently enjoying wrapping up my latest book, The 10 Delusions (a relationship book only a divorce (need accent over e) could write. Only one chapter left. The book should be out in the first quarter next year and will be crammed with fun practical advice for anyone married or in a long-term partnership. It will soon be time to catch a plane and get in the studio with my friends at LinkedIn. Next week, we’ll be updating and improving several courses. I’ll let you know when they go live. Last but not least – my ink addiction continues! Still working on full sleeves and making progress. See below! See you next time – Todd
Strangely this has become a central part of my brand. 🙂
