TIP OF THE DAY: Excuses Are An Addictive Drug
Todd Dewett | September 5, 2019
The first time you do it, you might hesitate… but it feels so good. Diving in for a second dose is considerably easier. Soon, it’s a habit. That’s how making excuses works. To be blunt, in life you can make excuses, or make progress. I know you face constraints, but many of them are not real, and some of them are real but can be managed differently. Step one is excuses. Step two is blame. Step three is self-pity. It’s an addictive downward spiral. Life is just a series of choices about how we choose to perceive and engage our world. You can start making progress one choice at a time. Make the first choice personal responsibility, no excuses allowed. Make that choice first thing every day and in a few weeks and you will have formed a habit that can reshape your life.
Here’s your call to action: The key to relying less on excuses and more on creative hustle, is to admit you’re making excuses. Write down the most common excuse you have…. 1) for not achieving at work, 2) not feeling fulfilled at home, and 3) not being as healthy as you wish you were. Admit they are not real obstacles, just things you indulge instead of doing the hard work. Go tell a friend about the little thought game you just played. Do this at least twice every year and you will likely avoid excuse addiction.

I continue writing The 10 Delusions. I think I only have two chapters left. This will be a fun, fast, and practical take on surviving and thriving in marriages or any long-term partnership.
